Commercial General Liability

Core third-party liability protection for eligible businesses.

Commercial General Liability can respond when business operations, premises, products, or completed work allegedly injure someone or damage their property.

Please use the form for initial information only. We will guide secure next steps when more detail is needed.

Who it is for

Contractors, retailers, offices, service businesses, restaurants, landlords, and other eligible businesses that need liability protection or a certificate of insurance.

What matters before you compare

  • Class of business, operations, payroll, sales, subcontractors, locations, and loss history drive underwriting
  • A certificate is evidence of insurance, not an expansion of coverage
  • Professional errors, employee injuries, vehicles, pollution, cyber events, and employment claims usually require other coverage

Common coverages and policy features

Exact coverage depends on the policy form, limits, deductibles, endorsements, exclusions, and carrier approval. These explanations are educational and do not replace the policy contract.

Bodily Injury

Helps cover defense and damages when a third party alleges that your business operations or premises caused physical injury.

Third-Party Property Damage

Helps cover defense and damages when your business is legally responsible for damaging property that belongs to someone else.

Personal and Advertising Injury

May cover specified offenses such as libel, slander, certain privacy violations, or advertising injury, subject to definitions and exclusions.

Products / Completed Operations

Helps address covered injury or property damage allegedly caused by products sold or work completed away from your premises.

Legal Defense

Pays eligible attorney fees, investigation, and court costs for covered claims according to the policy. Defense treatment relative to the limit should be reviewed.

Commercial General Liability: Frequently asked questions

What does general liability insurance cover?

It commonly addresses third-party bodily injury, third-party property damage, personal and advertising injury, and products/completed-operations claims, subject to the policy.

What is not covered by general liability?

Common gaps include professional errors, employee injuries, owned vehicles, employment practices, pollution, cyber events, damage to your own property, and intentional acts.

What is a certificate of insurance?

A COI summarizes policy information for a client, landlord, or other party. It does not change coverage, create rights, or automatically add someone as an additional insured.

What is an additional insured?

It is a person or organization granted certain protection under your policy by an endorsement or qualifying contract. The scope depends on the actual endorsement—not the certificate alone.

Does general liability cover subcontractors?

Not automatically for every situation. Carriers may require subcontractor costs, written contracts, certificates, additional-insured status, and specific limits. Your policy may exclude or restrict uninsured subcontractor work.

What are per-occurrence and aggregate limits?

The per-occurrence limit is the most the policy pays for one covered occurrence. The aggregate is generally the most it pays for covered claims during the policy period, subject to separate aggregates.

Is tools or equipment coverage included?

Usually not in CGL. Your tools, inventory, and equipment require commercial property, inland marine, or a BOP, depending on where and how they are used.

Why are sales, payroll, and subcontractor costs requested?

They help measure exposure and may be audited after the policy term. If actual figures exceed estimates, additional premium may be due.

Does submitting the form create a policy?

No. The form starts the review. Coverage exists only after the carrier approves the risk, the terms are accepted, payment requirements are met, and the effective date is confirmed.

How does TerraBridge help with this decision?

TerraBridge gathers the initial context, checks markets available for commercial general liability, and explains relevant coverages, limits, deductibles, and tradeoffs. Final approval and issuance remain subject to carrier underwriting.

Insurance products are subject to underwriting approval, carrier availability, eligibility, terms, conditions, limitations, and exclusions. Submitting a request does not bind coverage, guarantee a quote, or create an insurance policy. Coverage is only effective when confirmed by the applicable carrier or authorized platform.
