Umbrella Insurance

Extra personal liability protection above your underlying policies.

A personal umbrella can add higher liability limits and defense protection after eligible auto, homeowners, renters, or other underlying coverage is exhausted.

Please use the form for initial information only. We will guide secure next steps when more detail is needed.

Who it is for

Individuals and families with assets, income, teenage drivers, rental property, pools, boats, frequent guests, or other exposures that could produce a large liability claim.

What matters before you compare

  • Umbrella is liability coverage; it does not repair your own home or vehicle
  • Required underlying auto, home, renters, boat, or landlord limits must be maintained
  • Exclusions, household drivers, properties, watercraft, business activities, and worldwide coverage vary

Coverage education

Common coverages and policy features

Exact coverage depends on the policy form, limits, deductibles, endorsements, exclusions, and carrier approval. These explanations are educational and do not replace the policy contract.

Excess Bodily Injury Liability

Can pay covered injury damages above the liability limit of an eligible underlying policy, up to the umbrella limit.

Excess Property Damage Liability

Can pay covered damage you are legally responsible for above the underlying policy’s property-damage limit.

Personal Injury Liability

Some umbrellas cover certain claims such as libel, slander, false arrest, or invasion of privacy that may be limited or absent in an underlying policy.

Legal Defense Costs

May pay eligible defense costs for a covered lawsuit, according to whether defense is inside or outside the policy limit and other contract terms.

Broader Liability Situations

Some policies extend to certain claims not covered by an underlying policy, often after a self-insured retention. The broader coverage and exclusions differ significantly by carrier.

Umbrella Insurance: Frequently asked questions

How does an umbrella policy work?

For a covered claim, the underlying policy generally pays first. The umbrella may then pay eligible damages above that limit, up to its own limit, after all policy conditions are met.

Does umbrella insurance cover damage to my own property?

No. It is primarily liability coverage. Damage to your home, vehicle, boat, or belongings belongs under the applicable property or physical-damage policy.

What underlying limits are required?

The umbrella carrier sets minimum auto, home, renters, landlord, boat, and other liability limits. If you carry less, you may be responsible for the gap.

How much umbrella coverage should I consider?

Review assets, future income, household drivers, properties, watercraft, pools, pets, rental activity, and lawsuit exposure. Common starting limits are $1 million, but the right amount is personal.

Are all household members covered?

Coverage depends on the definition of insured and on all drivers, residences, vehicles, and exposures being disclosed. Adult children or relatives living elsewhere may not qualify.

Does an umbrella cover rental properties?

It may if the property and landlord policy are disclosed and accepted and required underlying limits are maintained. Short-term rentals and business activity may be restricted.

Does umbrella coverage apply outside the United States?

Some policies provide broad worldwide personal-liability protection, but lawsuits, vehicles, residences, and local-law limitations can change how coverage works.

Does it cover business or professional liability?

Usually not under a personal umbrella. Business, board service, and professional activities often require separate commercial or professional liability coverage.

Does submitting the form create a policy?

No. The form starts the review. Coverage exists only after the carrier approves the risk, the terms are accepted, payment requirements are met, and the effective date is confirmed.

How does TerraBridge help with this decision?

TerraBridge gathers the initial context, checks markets available for umbrella insurance, and explains relevant coverages, limits, deductibles, and tradeoffs. Final approval and issuance remain subject to carrier underwriting.

Insurance products are subject to underwriting approval, carrier availability, eligibility, terms, conditions, limitations, and exclusions. Submitting a request does not bind coverage, guarantee a quote, or create an insurance policy. Coverage is only effective when confirmed by the applicable carrier or authorized platform.
