Common coverages and policy features

Exact coverage depends on the policy form, limits, deductibles, endorsements, exclusions, and carrier approval. These explanations are educational and do not replace the policy contract.

Accident Treatment

May reimburse eligible care for injuries such as broken bones, bite wounds, swallowed objects, or other sudden accidents, subject to exclusions and limits.

Illness Treatment

Accident-and-illness plans may reimburse eligible care for new illnesses such as infections, digestive disease, cancer, or other covered conditions after applicable waiting periods.

Diagnostics

May include eligible exams, laboratory work, X-rays, ultrasound, MRI, or other tests used to diagnose a covered accident or illness.

Surgery and Hospitalization

May reimburse eligible procedures, anesthesia, emergency care, and hospital stays related to a covered condition, subject to plan terms.

Prescription Medication

May reimburse medication prescribed to treat a covered accident or illness. Preventive medications and special diets may be excluded unless specifically included.

Optional Wellness Care

Some plans offer a separate preventive-care benefit for routine exams, vaccines, or dental cleaning. Wellness is not automatically included in accident-and-illness coverage.

Pet Insurance: Frequently asked questions

Does pet insurance cover pre-existing conditions?

Generally not. A condition may be considered pre-existing if signs or symptoms appeared before enrollment or during a waiting period, even without a formal diagnosis. Definitions vary by insurer.

Do I pay the veterinarian first?

Usually yes. Many pet policies reimburse you after you pay the vet and submit the invoice and medical records. Some programs may offer direct-pay arrangements with participating clinics.

What does reimbursement percentage mean?

After the deductible and any non-covered charges, the plan may reimburse a selected percentage of eligible expenses, such as 70%, 80%, or 90%, up to the applicable limit.

Is the deductible annual or per condition?

It depends on the plan. An annual deductible resets each policy year; a per-condition deductible can apply separately to each covered condition.

What is a waiting period?

It is the time after enrollment before certain coverage begins. Accident, illness, and orthopedic waiting periods may differ, subject to state law and the policy.

Are hereditary or congenital conditions covered?

Some plans cover eligible hereditary or congenital conditions if they were not pre-existing; others limit or exclude them. Breed-specific risks should be reviewed carefully.

Does pet insurance cover routine care?

Not unless preventive or wellness benefits are included or purchased. Vaccines, routine exams, grooming, and dental cleaning are commonly outside standard accident-and-illness coverage.

Can the premium increase as my pet ages?

Yes. Age, breed, location, veterinary costs, coverage selections, and filed rate changes may affect renewal premium. Review how benefits and price may change over time.

Does submitting the form create a policy?

No. The form starts the review. Coverage exists only after the carrier approves the risk, the terms are accepted, payment requirements are met, and the effective date is confirmed.

How does TerraBridge help with this decision?

TerraBridge gathers the initial context, checks markets available for pet insurance, and explains relevant coverages, limits, deductibles, and tradeoffs. Final approval and issuance remain subject to carrier underwriting.

Insurance products are subject to underwriting approval, carrier availability, eligibility, terms, conditions, limitations, and exclusions. Submitting a request does not bind coverage, guarantee a quote, or create an insurance policy. Coverage is only effective when confirmed by the applicable carrier or authorized platform.
